The countdown to the Brisbane 2032 Games is on and businesses can get involved by preparing early.

Opportunities will be available to businesses across all industries including infrastructure, event management, tourism, sporting clubs, retail, real estate and hospitality.

What the Olympics will mean for Brisbane and Australia

Hosting the world’s largest and most spectacular sporting event will put Brisbane firmly on the international stage. By attracting tourists and major events in the years leading up to and following 2032, it is expected that the benefits to the city and Queensland will be felt for a number of decades.

Economic benefit

According to early forecasts, the Games are set to deliver an $8.1 billion economic benefit for Queensland and $17.6 billion for Australia. This could mean Queensland’s SMEs are in line to share in billions of dollars’ worth of exposure and opportunities arising from the 2032 Olympics.

Jobs

Hosting the 2032 Olympics will not only inject billions into the economy, it is expected to create around 120,000 new jobs, including 90,000 jobs for Queenslanders from associated investments in event operations and infrastructure.

With a raft of development and infrastructure projects ready to break ground, there will be many opportunities for businesses to take advantage of. In Brisbane alone, this includes the building of three new sports stadiums, along with a $1 billion redevelopment of the Gabba. Brisbane Council is also funding the development of cycling lanes, pedestrian walks, and green bridges to link different parts of the city, as well as a number of other infrastructure initiatives.

Brisbane and beyond

While most of the competition will be located at venues within 5km of Brisbane’s CBD, seven events will be hosted on the Gold Coast, and four on the Sunshine Coast. As a result, a number of temporary and permanent developments will be built across the two coasts, providing a range of regional projects for businesses to benefit from.

What can businesses do now?

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is expected to create a 20-year pipeline of opportunities for Queensland businesses to:

• take part in new projects;
• create valuable new partnerships and develop supply chains; and
• develop their business capability.

1. Explore procurement opportunities with Business Queensland. You can now register for the Buy Queensland supplier newsletter to receive updates about how your business can be involved in the Games. Visit business.qld.gov.au and look for the “Supply to Brisbane 2032” topic to sign up to the newsletter and stay up to date with available opportunities.
2. Follow the Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland (CCIQ) on social media for details of upcoming free masterclass workshops and seminars on how to win business arising from Brisbane 2032 opportunities. 3. Get your business “Tender ready” by registering your business capability on QTenders and be alerted about relevant open opportunities across Queensland Government. You can also view the Queensland Government Forward Procurement Pipeline to receive notice of future opportunities. In terms of improving your tender approach, there are a number of tips and resources available on the Business Queensland website.
4. Include your involvement in the 2032 Games in your medium to long-term business plans. Certain business ventures, marketing, technology upgrades, product development, recruitment and training may take years to plan, implement, and finance. Taking a proactive approach now will place you in a stronger position to leverage the Olympics procurement opportunities as they start to arise.
