Client Case Study: McGees Property

While some companies come and go, there are those that stand the test of time. Business longevity in this day and age is becoming increasingly rare. But sometimes this durability lasts many decades and even surpasses a century.  What is it about certain companies that sets them apart from the lifespan of other businesses?

Pilot Partners has expertise and age-old relationships with many clients that span decades, allowing us to develop a deep understanding of our clients’ businesses. One such relationship is with McGees Property, a commercial property firm which has been woven intricately into the Brisbane business fabric for more than 130 years.

Background

McGees Property and Pilot have fostered a strong business relationship over several decades, with the third generation McGees Property ownership team now working with the third generation advisory team at Pilot Partners, including Pilot’s predecessor firms.

Throughout these many decades, this long-standing business relationship has grown steadfastly with Pilot Partners’ head of taxation, Murray Howlett, more recently taking over the reins from retired partner Richard Edwards, to continue to provide business advisory services to McGees in its 130th anniversary year.

Business solutions from Pilot

Pilot has supported McGees, engaging in an ongoing conversation around business planning at regular intervals throughout the year. Together the two have worked closely to uncover potential opportunities that have had a domino effect on McGees’ finances.

“Not only has Pilot been there alongside us for many decades giving critical accounting advice, and ensuring our compliance with tax returns and the like, they have also acted as an extension to our business, providing valuable business advisory services, dealing with banks and financial institutions as required, and helping us handle business issues and challenges along the way,” Justin Clarke, McGees Director explains.

Pilot strive to provide our clients with value well beyond their tax return, building a solid understanding of business strategy and good planning to enhance cash flow.

“A business advisor is very much like having your own personal mentor,” said Mr Howlett.

“It’s our job to tell it like it is without sugar coating the risks. Business in the modern era can be very confusing and there are many ways under many different laws that business owners can get caught out. Our job is to mitigate the risks and look for opportunities to grow the business.”

Looking ahead

What remains important to McGees is nurturing a positive culture, with a strong work ethic, to achieve superior results while maintaining their position within the commercial property space.

Pilot Partners share many of these goals, with common threads in terms of culture, work ethic, and a results focus underpinned by time-honoured relationships.

“Through our robust understanding of the McGees Property business and knowledge of the common goals our businesses share, we are well positioned to continue to help contribute to McGees future success and look forward to being there to advise and support them as they navigate what lies ahead,” said Murray Howlett.

A sentiment that is supported by McGees Director, Justin Clarke: “As McGees plan for their future and next generations’ success, we look forward to Pilot being there with us on this journey, and value their ongoing contribution to guide us along the way.”
